Florida Summer Car Maintenance Checklist

1. Test Your Air Conditioning Early

There’s nothing worse than discovering your AC is blowing warm air on a 95-degree afternoon in Pinellas County. AC systems lose refrigerant slowly over time, and a system that felt fine in the spring can struggle once summer heat really kicks in. Warning signs include weaker airflow, warm air even on the coldest setting, a musty smell when the AC first turns on, or unusual noises from the compressor.

2. Check Your Coolant System

Your engine’s cooling system works overtime in Florida summers, especially during stop-and-go traffic near the beaches or on I-275. Coolant (also called antifreeze) keeps your engine from overheating, but it breaks down over time and needs to be at the correct level and mixture to do its job.

Low coolant, a failing radiator cap, or a clogged radiator can all lead to overheating — one of the most common summer breakdowns we see. If your temperature gauge creeps toward the red zone, or you notice sweet-smelling steam from under the hood, get it checked immediately rather than continuing to drive.

3. Have Your Battery Tested

Most people assume winter kills car batteries, but in Florida, it’s actually the summer heat that does the most damage. High temperatures accelerate the chemical reactions inside a battery, causing fluid to evaporate faster and internal components to corrode more quickly. A battery that seemed fine in the spring can fail without warning once the heat really sets in.

4. Check Tire Pressure and Tread

Hot Florida pavement causes the air inside your tires to expand, which can push an already low tire toward a blowout — especially on long stretches of highway during a summer road trip. Check your tire pressure monthly (when tires are cold, ideally in the morning) and compare it to the recommended PSI listed on the sticker inside your driver’s door, not the number printed on the tire itself.

While you’re at it, check your tread depth. Worn tires combined with Florida’s sudden summer downpours are a recipe for hydroplaning. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head when you insert a penny into the tread, it’s time to start shopping for new tires.

5. Top Off and Change Fluids

Heat puts extra stress on all of your vehicle’s fluids, not just coolant. Engine oil breaks down faster in high temperatures, and if you’re overdue for an oil change, summer heat will make that old oil even less effective at protecting your engine. Power steering fluid, brake fluid, and transmission fluid should all be checked as well, since low or degraded fluid levels can lead to bigger problems when your car is already working harder in the heat.

If you can’t remember your last oil change, it’s a good time to schedule one before your next long drive across Pinellas County or beyond.

6. Inspect Belts and Hoses

Rubber belts and hoses are especially vulnerable to Florida’s heat and humidity. Over time, this combination causes them to dry out, crack, and become brittle — and a snapped serpentine belt or a burst radiator hose can leave you stranded fast, often with little warning. During a summer inspection, we check for cracking, fraying, soft spots, and leaks so small issues get caught before they turn into a roadside breakdown.

7. Don’t Forget Your Wipers and Washer Fluid

Florida’s rainy season kicks into high gear right alongside the summer heat, with fast-moving afternoon storms that can dump heavy rain in minutes. Worn wiper blades that streak or skip can seriously reduce visibility exactly when you need it most. Check your blades for cracking or stiffness — a byproduct of sun exposure — and replace them if they’re not clearing your windshield cleanly. Keep your washer fluid topped off too, since summer brings extra pollen, bugs, and road grime along with the rain.

8. Get Your Brakes Checked Before Road Trips

Summer means more driving — beach trips, vacations, and visiting family — and that means more wear on your brakes, especially in heavy tourist traffic around the Pinellas beaches. Heat can also affect brake fluid and pad performance, so if you’ve noticed any squealing, grinding, or a soft pedal feel, get it checked before you hit the road. 9. Pack a Summer Emergency Kit

Even with all your maintenance done, it’s smart to keep a basic emergency kit in your car during Florida’s hottest months: water, a phone charger, a flashlight, a small first-aid kit, and your roadside assistance information. If you do end up stranded on the side of I-275 or a local Pinellas Park road in the middle of summer, having water and a way to call for help makes a real difference while you wait.
